The Hidden Benefits for Work at Home Moms

by Eucalyptus

You already know there are plenty of benefits to being a work at home mom. The biggest bonus is staying home with your kids! But there are also the delightful perks of being your own boss, setting the hours that are best for you and your family, and the savings you will see when you stop commuting to work. But did you know there are some hidden benefits to being a work at home mom that you might not have considered?

It’s true that when you decide to work from home, you are essentially your own boss. Even if you are affliliated with a particular employer, you are the one who oversees the work you perform. But did you ever consider that when you work from home, you can work for more than one company? If you choose to devote a single day a week to another job, such as web design or transcription or freelance writing, you can do it!

If you are an independent contractor, you can pick and choose your jobs. You might wind up working for half a dozen different employers, doing all kinds of different jobs. You can explore the possibilities until you find a position that makes you happy, and you can gradually devote more time to that particular employer.

When it comes to taxes, you’re in for a treat! You can include home office expenses as deductions, and perhaps even a portion of your mortgage. If you have a job that requires a bit of travel, you can include mileage as a deduction as well. Don’t forget to keep track of office supplies, interest on home loans, utilities, the cost of your phone and long distance, and any cleaning costs of your home office space. If you use your computer to do the majority of your work, keep note of any supplies or repairs for the machine.

Finally, consider a more personal part of working from home. You’re showing your kids what a good work ethic is really like! With a hard-working mother at home with them all the time, they are learning that you can make the most of both worlds – and that your priorities put them in the top spot. What better incentive is there to work from home?
