Work at Home Spotlight: Customer Service

by Eucalyptus

If you’re looking for flexible hours and contact with the world outside of your home office, working customer service might be the best work at home job for you. Being a customer service representative is a challenging yet rewarding job that can offer big paychecks, especially if you have a very specialized skill set and the ability to solve problems over the phone.

Once upon a time, companies ushered their customer service representatives into little rooms or cubicles and set them down in front of a phone bank, where they answered calls throughout their entire shift. This isn’t how it works anymore! Companies have recognized that it isn’t necessary to have all of their customer service representatives in one place, so they now outsource the work they need done. As a work at home mom, that’s good news for you!

You will need a reliable internet connection, a dedicated phone line, and a direct way to contact the company if you run into a problem. You can set your hours at a time that is convenient for both you and the company, and calls will be routed to your dedicated phone line only during those times. You might have to attend training classes, whether in person or over the internet, which will guide you through the steps of handling customers for that particular company.

Once you’re ready to go, prepare for an interesting ride! Customer service gets all kinds of calls, from the very simple ones that are easy to fix within seconds, to the more detailed ones that will take up a lot of time. You will deal with customers who are very grateful for your help, but there will also be times when you have to calm a customer down. Part of the excitement of the job is that you never know what you’re going to get with the next phone call.

Customer service pays well, especially for a specialized skill set. If you are great with computers, working for a software firm might be the best place. If you are great with small engines, working for a farm supply store will be one of your top options. There is customer service for everything from kitchen appliances to pharmaceutical companies, so there is bound to be a niche market that suits you perfectly!

If you’re serious about working only certain hours and having ample time for your family, and if you’re willing to work with people from all walks of life, give work at home customer service a try.
